オオカミはブタを食べようと思った。Stop motion with wolf and pig (via dokugyunyu)

Inctredibly clever stop motion with photographs. I’ve seen this technique before, but never addressing so well the spatial oresence of photos.

Cute Overload has nothing on this.
I’m pretty sure the next wave of cuteness to his the web will involve just this. Animals in dollhouses. Hedgehogs having tea parties with action figures, tarsiers relaxing on miniature recliners, and white mice nibbling away at teensy kitchen tables.
It would be adorable. Though maybe a sign also of my coming insanity.

Ponyo - Extrait 2 (via BVIFrance)

So gorgeous. Everything feels so rich, so vibrant and alive. In the case of the waves I suppose this is meant to be the case, but it’s gorgeous to watch. Something about how globular the water is, how moving the wind.

Even simple motions are exercised with care and precision and it feels not like an imitation of life in animation, but something embodying the weight of something more.

I can’t wait to see this film!

Mont Saint Michel looking distinctly Laputa-esque. (via _annalaura_)
I found a great watercolor by Miyazaki that referenced the island monastery beautifully, but I can’t find a good enough resolution for posting. Maybe I’ll dig something up.

Moebius’ Arzach (5/77) (via jl.incrowd)
I can’t believe I just discovered the works and worlds of French artist Jean Giraud, better known as Moebius. After reading up on his biography, I found his departure into sci-fi and fantasy graphic novels to be extremely compelling. His artistic vision at the very least is something to behold.
I truly need to get my hands on a copy of his work. It’s funny that so much is available to us online, but the printed word and picture are still so elusive.
I’ll also post this great interview with Hayao Miyazaki and Moebius. It would appear that the two respected each other greatly — enough for Moebius to name his daughter Nausicaa. Plus the fact that they were co-headers of an art exhibit in Paris could only help.
Too bad it was way back in 2005!

On the night of Sept. 2, 1859, an enormous solar flare produced brilliant auroras around the world. Newspapers and ships’ logs reported striking displays throughout the United States, Europe, Japan, and Australia; Bostonians could read by their light at 1 a.m.

Also, even though I’m not certain there will be a huge call for Carl action figures, I’m more than certain to go after this odd bird. THE SNIPE.
Toucan Sam has nothing on this critter!

Pixar’s Latest Film Has Wall Street on Edge
Ok. So this isn’t exactly news. Everyone is questioning Pixar, but its something we’ve seen countless times. Now more than ever it would seem that this animation company is the only one truly embracing the medium and turning 3D into art.
What I love about Pixar and will always respect them for is their ardent, obsessive, and altogether geeky passion for creating only the most quality story-telling and animation. Films like Ratatouille and Wall-E were predicted to be flops — who would watch a film with a Rat as a cook, how would kids be entertained by a film with no dialogue?
But as the 3D revolution progresses, becomes commonplace, and turned into a cash-cow by Hollywood — Pixar becomes all the more exceptional in a sea of quick-laugh, 3D spec flicks, with characters just marketable enough to be sold with Happy Meals.
I have to admit however, that I have had my doubts. I thought for sure that Toy Story 2 and Cars signaled the end … and even though the sequels are on the horizon … just seeing the synopsis for UP! makes me smile. How perfect is it for Pixar to embrace the most non-typical “cartoon” hero, a cantankerous old man who sees his altogether impossible dreams through?

TELEX We are all Getting Old

I can’t stop thinking of how much I’ve changed since my first year. As a bright eyed, synth pop loving, geeky girly I can’t believe I’ve let my love of Telex … Zlad, Dschingis Khan, Trans-X … pass me by.

Back when Moldovia and synthesizers were the center of conversation — things seemed so much simpler.

I’m glad YouTube lets me return to such things, and actually find high-def videos of these early New Wave pioneers! These definitely weren’t up three years ago.

My love of Royksopp knows no ends. It’s already Spring in Paris, and I feel like I have the perfect Spring break soundtrack now. Graduation and the Summer is just around the corner — this sound is he perfect “nostalgic summer” material.

I need to have this on a shirt, I think.
Also — thank goodness the internet has finally found something Pac-Man related that is not the overplayed “percentage of this Pie Chart that looks like Pac-Man” (le sigh).

Oil Sands - Google Maps

Some extra research for my Energy Policies class. Very pretty, despite the damage caused by oil prospecting here and its immense cost.
