She Wandered Like A Meteor

Stumbling upon the web, through life.

My recent obsession. The Uptown theater.

One of the largest theater spaces in all of Chicago, this gorgeous landmark on the city’s northside has sat neglected and boarded up the for last 30 years. Photos of the interior have made my urbex sense tingle, but the last photos taken within are from 4 years ago.

As theaters across Chicago have been renovated (most notably the Patio in my home-neighborhood of Portage Park), there is renewed hope that The Uptown can get the restoration is deserves. From the sounds of it, Mayor Emanuel has made it a pet project of his, though the estimated ~40 million required to open the doors has scared many an investor away.

But how can you say no to a place that has been billed “an acre of seats in a magic city” and was — wait for it — the shooting location for Duncan’s Toy Chest of Home Alone 2 fame?

I’m hoping this place can come back in my lifetime, and if not, that I can somehow get the good graces of the Friends of the Uptown theater, befriend the caretaker and spend the day taking photos in this gorgeous place.
