Its getting rainy, the galoshes are out, and the leaves are falling at an alarming rate. A recent trip to IKEA brought back fond memories of grogg and found expression in some mulled cider and rhum. Apple picking is on my mind, but really I just want to bake up some szarlotka with the smell of Cinnamon thick in the kitchen air .. all of these things plus a general sense of coziness, something you can never appreciate fully until it’s gone.

Why didn’t I know about this earlier? Whereas Critical Mass is a celebration of cycling within the city of Chicago, the perimeter ride is exactly that — 100+ mile (also known as a century) ride around Chicago! From Calumet to Niles and back up North. An all day ordeal that this year falls on this upcoming Saturday’s weekend. Ahh, if my bike were in better condition — and perhaps other contributing members hadn’t stopped biking downtown regularly, perhaps this would be a totally doable thing! Looks fantastic at any rate.

Just finished watching three seasons of The Mighty Boosh, when I...

Just finished watching three seasons of The Mighty Boosh, when I happened upon this article. I figure this look would be perfect for Vince Noir, especially when considering his ever-shifting influences. Truly the last sentence of the quote rings clear in modern times.

Caricaturists found a perfect subject in the form of the masculine fashions of the late 1790s. Both young men wear tight-fitting square-cut coats with huge lapels, and knee-breeches decorated with loops of fabric. Their political sympathies are not necessarily clear. Although their culottes date from the ancien régime, their printed cravats are working-class in origin; and, while the man on the left wears his hair plaited at the back à la victime, the man on the right has a revolutionary cockade prominently pinned to his hat. Both have shaggy hair, the side locks falling like spaniel’s ears. The implications seems to be that fashion is more important than ideology. — Fashion in the French Revolution, Aileen Ribeiro

Roadtrip plans have been in the works for a while. The sense of...

Roadtrip plans have been in the works for a while. The sense of adventure and an open road just calls to me — it’s a matter of being raised on spontaneous road-trips from a very early age. And a certain wanderlust developed from my spring break Euro-hopping at the beginning of the year.

Some ideas.

Michigan, camping weekend. Ride up to the dunes — Sleeping Bear Lake (or Warren, which is much closer). Stop for cherry picking and tanning, possibly work in some kayaking.

Ann Arbor-Buffalo/Toronto-Montreal-Quebec. Week-long. I’ve had a hankering to go back this way since my collegiate tour of Toronto and McGill, though I knew I wouldn’t be able to bear the cold, Ontario and Quebec in the summertime are far too gorgeous to miss. Plus I have fun folks I can run into on the way there, and an excuse to relive my love for all things uber-French.

The North-west: BC, Vancouver-Seattle-Portland. Passing through The Badlands, Yellowstone, down through the Southwest if I’m daring enough. 2+ weeks. This would be the ultimate trip, a final piecing in of the roadtrip map my family started, by making it out to the ONE CORNER of the US we haven’t yet hit. Though the drive would hit old routes, and the nations beautiful parks, but I’m sure a fresh perspecitve and camp-outs and hostels instead of motel rooms will make this very exciting indeed.

Biking adventure. Undertermined. This is a scalable project that has already commenced, it’s gone from me biking downtown regularly to setting my sights on crossing state borders (Chicago-Gary-Dunes, Chicago-Home-Milwaukee) to potentially … ultimately, the Great Lakes Circle Tour. If I can accomplish this at some point in my life, I will be a happy camper indeed.

The ultimate problem with all of these is not my willingness to do it, or even the resources … it’s finding people to share the experience with. We’ll see how that goes.

I’m missing Paris quite a lot. You’d think this postsecret was mine.

And yet - pushing myself to rediscover Chicago, to enjoy it in the same way that I enjoyed Paris … Well I think it may be having an effect.

All of the bile trips, excursions downtown, free concerts, and sunny days at the point —- Chicago really can be a completely different city in the summer.

I’m planning on taking more trips and hopefully roadripping a bit this summer — so with my new iPhone on hand I’ll have some way of proving to myself that the grass isn’t always boring and trampled on your own side.

SO I figured, after two years in this blog format— “Miscallania” might be getting...

SO I figured, after two years in this blog format— “Miscallania” might be getting a bit of a change. Used as I was to updating about fun and exciting things over at my Paris blog, I’m hopeful that this can become more than just a one stop for some random but wonderful things I see on the web, and can rather become more of a space for updates, photos, art projects, and generally [original content].
I fell in love with them after finding them at a neo-hippie market in Montpellier, and well, they’re just everything I could ask for. Bizarre as heck, 80s inspired, clearly incredibly comfortable, and euro-stylish. What more could I ask for?

Apparently they’re being called harem pants, which had eluded me for a while. I’d always thought of them as hammer pants, heh.

P020109PS-0339 (via The Official White House Photostream)

One might think that this form of action is a bit intense … but really, you don’t understand this class.

I can’t believe I just discovered the works and worlds of French artist Jean Giraud, better known as Moebius. After reading up on his biography, I found his departure into sci-fi and fantasy graphic novels to be extremely compelling. His artistic vision at the very least is something to behold.

I truly need to get my hands on a copy of his work. It’s funny that so much is available to us online, but the printed word and picture are still so elusive.

I’ll also post this great interview with Hayao Miyazaki and Moebius. It would appear that the two respected each other greatly — enough for Moebius to name his daughter Nausicaa. Plus the fact that they were co-headers of an art exhibit in Paris could only help.

Too bad it was way back in 2005!
